Christoph Waltz to Lead Stephen Frears’ ‘Billy Wilder and Me’ for Producer Jeremy Thomas
Two time Oscar winner Christoph Waltz will play one of Hollywood’s icons in Billy Wilder, and Me ,. Stephen Frears will direct.
The project was announced by Jeremy Thomas, a legendary producer fresh off his Cannes success with Jury Prize Winner EO ,. It will be based upon Jonathan Coe’s 2020 book Mr Wilder as well as Me , with Christopher Hampton adapting.
Part coming-of-age story, part true-life portrait of the beloved Billy Wilder (Waltz), the film is set during the summer of 1977, when an innocent young woman begins working for the famed director and his screenwriter Iz Diamond on a Greek island during the filming of Fedora. She follows Wilder to Germany for the next shoot and finds herself on a journey of memories into the heart of Wilder’s family history.
Frears teams with two-time Oscar-winning screenwriter Hampton, their third collaboration after Dangerous Liaisons and Cheri. Thomas and Frears made the cult movie The Hit together in 1984.
Reinhard Brundig, Christos V.Konstantakopoulos and Christos V.Konstantakopoulos are the
Co producers. They previously worked with Thomas on Jim Jarmusch’s Only Lovers Left Alive.
Productions will begin in the spring of 2023, in Paris, Munich, and Greece. Soon, casting for additional principal roles will be announced.

Added Waltz: “Billy Wilder stated, ‘You must have a dream to get up in the morning.’ I think a Stephen Frears movie based on a Christopher Hampton script should do the trick .”
Hampton stated: “From the moment we first met in Los Angeles in early eighties, Billy Wilder has been extremely kind and encouraging to us. Jonathan Coe’s amazing novel has given me the perfect opportunity to express my appreciation and gratitude for one of the undisputed titans of cinema history .”
Thomas said: “I’m excited by this collaboration, and I look forward to seeing it as a committed cinema lover .”
