Jim Formanek was the director of consumer products at The Jim Henson Co. for the past 15years. He died Wednesday from complications from cancer at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center, Burbank. He was 50.

Formanek was an assistant president at Henson’s 2000. He then went on to lead consumer product development at the Muppets’ home. He worked on products, publishing, collectibles and clothing for such brands as Sid the Science Kid, Dinosaur Train, Fraggle Rock, The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth.

” I make toys and read comic books to make a living. I’m Tom Hanks in the movie Big ,”, he once said.

” We are truly heartbroken by the passing of Jim Formanek,” Lisa Henson, Henson CEO, said in a statement. Jimmy, a fan, shared his deep appreciation of detail and whimsy in all the toys, books and comics from the last 15 year. For our company, Jimmy’s legacy includes his sense of humor and devoted friendship, as well as his inspiring commitment to being a good person and caring for others. We send our support and love to Jimmy’s family .”

James Patrick Formanek, was born March 28, 1972, Minnesota. He was born in Webster, Wisconsin and graduated from the University of Minnesota at Duluth. He then moved to Los Angeles.

Survivors include his stepmother Jean, his siblings Debbie, Dave, and Dennis, and brother-in law Tim; sisters Robyn, Laura, and Traci, Bryan and Danielle; as well as nieces and nephews Sarah, Dan, Sarah, and Joshua.

Celebrations in his memory will be held this summer at Webster and Hollywood. A scholarship that has been established in his memory at Webster High School is accepting donations.
