Kardashians Talk Edit Room Notes, That Cucumber-Cutting Moment in Hulu Series
Three Kardashians — Khloe Kardashian Kris Jenner , and Kendall Jenner – stopped by Disney’s FYC Fest Wednesday for an Emmy-centered conversation about the first season of their Hulu show. The trio joined Ben Winston , showrunner Danielle King and executive producer Kris Jenner at Hollywood’s El Capitan Theatre for a conversation about their return to TV. They also discussed some of the most notable moments from the season, such as Khloe’s split with Tristan Thompson, and Kendall’s viral cucumber-cutting scene.
Though Winston admitted he was “definitely concerned about being the company that ruined The Kardashians and killed it” after the family’s 20 hit seasons on E!, Khloe explained, “We were looking for someone to get the Keeping Up with the Kardashians of us, but also know that there’s so much more that we haven’t been able to storytell.” Each sister sets her own boundary on how much she decides to show on camera — with this season including filming Khloe’s breakup, Kourtney’s engagement and fertility journey with Travis Barker, and the beginning of Kim’s relationship with Pete Davidson — but Khloe said Kylie and Kendall learned from their older sisters to keep their lives more private.
“They have seen a lot our mistakes or they’ve seen many things we’ve put on TV, and they’re like, “OK, I don’t want to put any of that in camera.'” Khloe added. Kendall said that Kylie and she are eager to talk more on the Hulu series and teased that they were willing to dive in. You’ll see more of that on season two .”
The family, which includes six executive producers, explained how they approach giving edit notes and deciding what to air.
” Personally, I don’t like taking stuff out. Khloe explained that she is like, “This is how it happened, this is how it played out.” Even if you don’t like yourself in a particular way or your tone or something that you said or did, it’s a mirror. Sometimes you need to reflect and learn from those moments. It’s been a great learning experience for me to watch myself and to see how certain situations or things affect me.” Khloe said that her sisters often ask for funny family moments to be added back. “It’s not about us taking out things to protect ourselves or to make the show better. It’s more about making the show hopefully better for the entire production team
Winston also noted an episode in which Kourtney candidly discussed on camera how unhappy she was with the edit surrounding her engagement. She felt it too focused too much on Scott Disick’s feelings than her new relationship.
” I liked that we added that. Winston stated that we almost gave her the voice of the cut she didn’t like and that it was put on air. “I think when they don’t like the show they say it. Even if it means there are articles saying, “Hey, they’re doing stuff they don’t like.” Winston said.
The Kardashian-Jenners also told the moderator, The Hollywood Reporter‘s Beatrice Verhoeven, about this season’s biggest challenges, as Khloe reflected on reliving Thompson’s cheating scandal on screen.
” It’s not fun, but it’s hard to ignore when things are so public. It’s something viewers would feel slighted by. “But the truth is that Kim was filming another story when this story appeared on the media .”
“It is not easy, but it is also, I believe, a form therapy for me.” She continued. “I enjoy seeing how my family reacts to things. These little things are very important to me .”
Kendall cited her cucumber scene, which she dubbed her standout moment after her unconventional cutting technique went viral online.
“It is hilarious, but I enjoy watching it back. Kendall said, “Why did I make it that way?” “I was literally talking to one our chefs and I was like, “Can you help? Can you tell me what I did wrong? I thought it was serious. But, it was hilarious and I love it. As if I were a noodle doing strange things
She said that she was surprised by the Internet’s reaction to the episode. She stated, “I clearly saw the episode before it was released and there was no part in me that was like, That’s weird.'”
Kris Jenner, the matriarch, said that her challenges with the show stem from being a mother and watching her daughters experience the highs and lows.
” I don’t know if anyone else feels the same way, but when someone has kids and they have spouses, baby daddys and boyfriends, it makes me feel like I just broke up. Kris joked that if they breakup with someone more than once a calendar year, I feel exhausted and need therapy. “So my challenge comes from a very emotional place and I just want them .”
Kris thanked Winston and King for their efforts on the show. The finale of the first season was held Wednesday night.
“You have helped us to grow and become better and also taught us a lot about what we do.” Kris said. “You’ve made our look really good, so thank-you .”
