Kino Lober has acquired North American rights to Costa Brava and Lebanon ,, a darkly comic tale set in the context of the current political-environmental crises in Lebanon.

Mounia Akl’s directorial debut, which premiered in Venice’s Orizzonti Extra sidebar last year, stars actress/director Nadine Labaki (Capernaum) and Saleh Bakri (The Band’s Visit). Kino Lorber plans a theatrical release of Costa Brava and Lebanon in July 15.

Aki’s intergenerational family tale focuses on the free-spirited Badri family, who in an attempt to escape the toxic pollution of Beirut, built a miniature utopia off the grid. The world intervenes when the he Lebanese government starts construction on a garbage dump right outside their fence. They are literally being brought the country’s trash, and corruption. The Badris have to choose between living in the system and remaining true to their ideals, or leaving their mountain home to face the harsh reality. Nadia Charbel, Liliane Charkar Khoury, Geana, Ceana Restom, and Geana are the co-stars.

Costa Brava, Lebanon was produced by Myriam Sassine and Georges Schoucair for Abbout Productions. The film was created as a Lebanese and French, Spanish, Swedish and Danish co-production. It was executive produced by Jeff Skoll and Anikah McLaren. Cinema Defacto and Lastor Media are co-producers.

Costa Brava in Lebanon captures the joys, frustrations, and relationships of a close-knit household with an intimacy that feels startlingly real and sets it against a sharply drawn background of environmental protests and pollution,” said Wendy Lidell, Kino Lorber SVP. Mounia Akl’s talent with actors is evident in the sensitively rendered performances she gets from her cast, which includes Nadine Labaki , a fellow actress and award-winning filmmaker.

Lidell negotiated the deal for Costa Brava and Lebanon on behalf of the filmmakers with Rob Williams from Participant and WME Independent. France’s mk2 films is handling international sales for the title.
