Sam Miller to Direct Ewan McGregor Starrer ‘A Gentleman in Moscow’ for Paramount+, Showtime (Exclusive)

BAFTA Award-winning director Sam Miller (Surface, I May Destroy You, Luther) is set to direct and executive produce the upcoming U.K. drama series A Gentleman in Moscow for Paramount and Showtime.

The limited-run series, which will star Ewan McGregor, as unveiled this summer, will debut exclusively on Paramount internationally in 2023 and on Showtime in the U.S. Due to commence production early next year, the adaptation of Amor Towles’ best-selling novel of the same name is produced by eOne in association with Paramount.

McGregor (Star Wars franchise, Trainspotting) is leading the cast as Count Alexander Rostov “who, in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution, finds that his gilded past places him on the wrong side of history,” according to a plot summary. He is spared immediate execution and banished by a Soviet tribunal into an attic room in the opulent Hotel Metropol. He is threatened with death if it ever happens again. Rostov’s circumstances are reduced over the years and some of the most turbulent decades in Russian history take place outside the hotel’s walls. This allows him to enter a larger world of emotional discovery. He discovers the true value in friendship, family, and love as he creates a new life within the hotel walls.

Miller was most recently the director and executive producer of the Apple/Hello Sunshine psychological thriller series Surface .. He also directed Michaela Coel’s series I Might Destroy You ,, for which he received a BAFTA. He was also nominated for three Emmy nominations, both for his work in crime drama Luther . UTA, Roxana Ale at Lark Management, and Ragna Nervik represent Miller.

A Gentleman In Moscow was written by Ben Vanstone (All Creatures Great And Small , The Last Kingdom ). It is the first production to be made through eOne’s first look deal with Tom Harper’s Popcorn Storm Pictures. Harper (War and Peace, Peaky Blinders) will also executive produce the show with Xavier Marchand (Nautilus, Mrs Harris Goes to Paris), McGregor and Towles.

The series is part of Paramount ‘s strategy to commission 150 international originals by 2025. It will be available on the streamer in the U.K. and all other international markets where it is available. Paramount continues to roll out in foreign markets. It will launch in France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Austria later in the year.
